Although the Campbell's Bay - Litchfield Fire Department officially exists since 1957, it's origins go back as far as the 1920's.
The Municipality of Campbell's Bay not having a fire protection service back then, relied on the employees of the now defunct Smith Brothers sawmill to provide such a service. Indeed, these employees would leave work to go combat fires on its territory with, of course, the company's equipment.
Then in 1957, a group of men got together and set forth an officially constituted fire brigade to provide the town with a fire protection service. Following the constitution of the Campbell's Bay Fire Department, the municipality agreed to purchase a fire truck at a cost of $8 700.00. This 1955 Thibault Seagrave pumper is still operational and now serves as a parade vehicle.
In 1979, the Municipality of Litchfield granted the required sums of money to purchase a tanker truck for the Department in exchange for fire protection services on its territory. The Department was then renamed Campbell's Bay - Litchfield Fire Department.
Since its incorporation in 1957, the Department has responded to more than 1 150 emergency calls, 744 of which where fire calls ( the C.B.L.F.D. also responds to medical and automobile extrication calls since 1981 ). The Department actually responds to more or less 50 calls of various nature per year.
The Campbell's Bay - Litchfield Fire Department presently has a manpower of 25 part time (volunteer) firefighters for which the average number of years of service is 21 years. Among them, 13 members accumulate over 20 years of service, three of which have reached the 50 years mark in 2007. Also, 12 members of the Department have completed the Pompier I certification.
The C.B.L.F.D.'s fleet of vehicles is composed of a 625gpm pumper, a 420 gpm pumper-tanker, a 1 100 gallon tanker, a 50 foot Telesquirt aerial ladder, an emergency vehicle and many different tools such as portable pumps, jaws of life and various pieces of equipment used for firefighting, first aid and search and rescue operations.
Finally, the Campbell's Bay - Litchfield Fire Department, which is located 100 km West of the Gatineau-Ottawa region on the Québec side of the Ottawa river, serves a 182 square kilometre territory, 98% of it being rural. The Department also responds to major fires in neighbouring municipalities.--------------------------------------
